Professional Web Developers are Specialists
Occasionally when I am contacting small businesses to generate new customers, I run on to a business owner that tells me that they had a friend or a family member build their website for them. And as you can imagine, I am curious to learn more. So, I’ll listen closely as the individual relates to me the great deal they got on the labor of the site. I’ll even ask what the web address is and, if possible, find out what it is they like most about their website. Often times, it is the price they remember over everything else.
Now there is nothing wrong with having a friend or a family member build a website for your small business, just as there is nothing wrong with having a friend or family member work on your home. However, there are nearly always benefits to having a professional do the work, whether it is your home, or your website. For example, you might let your nephew paint the kitchen, but would you let your neighbor, the doctor rewire it? Probably not. Why? Because he is not a professional electrician. Even if he can do it, he doesn’t do it regularly. Clearly, the project and the importance are keys in your decision. So why would the virtual home for your business be any different?
Nearly every single time I view the “someone I know built mine” websites I see one or more indications that the person was not a web developer or a web professional. Not always mind you, but just about every single time there are clues to that effect.
The advantages of hiring a professional are long-term and sometimes not easily seen. But rest assured, there are advantages.
Advantages of Professional Development
Often times, I’ll get new clients that have one or more aspects of a web presence, but either they do not have the site on the Internet yet, or they have a website but cannot find it in the search engines. This is because there are many aspects to getting your business on the Internet. Some of the biggies include:
- Having a place for it
- Having an address for it
- Helping people find it
All of which, have different specifics to consider in themselves. When you hire a professional web developer, these facets of your online marketing can be simplified or combined. Just like a professional electrician knows what gauge of wire is necessary and has the right tools and knowledge to simply do the work, so too a web designer that is a professional will have what it takes to keep it simple but do it right.
Perhaps the most important reason to hire a professional for your web development project is that you want it done right. Just like a bad wiring job can cost you more down the road, a poorly built website can cost more for you fix in the long run. By hiring a web development specialist to build your site you’ll be able to find your business online, you’ll pay less over the long-term for edits and changes, and your business will grow from the exposure you receive via the Internet.
